Frequently asked questions
What exactly is removed?
Embedded metadata: GPS coordinates, the date and time of shooting, the camera or phone model and other technical tags.
Will the photo lose quality?
Not for JPG and PNG: only the hidden data is cut out and the image itself is untouched. Rotated JPGs, HEIC and WebP are re-saved as JPG at high quality.
Don't messengers remove this data anyway?
It depends on the app and on how you send the photo, for example as an image or as a file. Cleaning the photo yourself means you do not have to rely on that.
How do I remove the location from a photo on iPhone or Android?
Open this page in your phone browser, choose the photos and download the cleaned copies. They no longer contain GPS coordinates, so share those instead of the originals.
How can I check whether a photo has location data?
On a computer, open the file properties: the Details tab on Windows or Get Info on a Mac. On a phone, open the photo's details in the gallery.
Why do the cleaned files have "-clean" in their name?
So you can tell them from the originals at a glance and do not send the wrong file by mistake.
