Frequently asked questions

HEIC to PNG or JPG: which should I choose?

PNG if you are going to edit or print the photo and want no further loss. JPG if you want to send it, post it or upload it to a form, because the file is many times smaller.

Why is the PNG so much bigger than the HEIC?

HEIC and JPG discard detail the eye hardly sees, while PNG stores every pixel exactly. That is why a 12-megapixel photo can take 15–40 MB as a PNG.

Will the PNG have a transparent background?

No. iPhone photos in HEIC have no transparency, so the PNG has none either. To cut out the background, use the Remove background page.

How do I open iPhone photos on a Windows computer?

Convert them here to PNG or, if you do not need lossless copies, to JPG. Both formats open in any Windows program.

Can I convert a whole batch of HEIC files to PNG?

Yes. Choose them all together and download each PNG separately or all of them in one ZIP; the archive will be large.

Is any quality lost when converting HEIC to PNG?

No further loss: the PNG is an exact copy of what is in the HEIC. It cannot restore detail that HEIC compression removed when the photo was taken.
